Cantonese Opera: Its Introduction & Influence in America
03/05/2005 [Sat] 10:00 AM
CHSA Wells Fargo Foundation Learning Center
965 Clay Street,
San Francisco,
CA,
94108, (415)391-1188
Chinese performing arts scholar Dr. William Hu will lecture on the colorful and rich history of Cantonese opera in San Francisco, in conjunction with the exhibit “Painted Men: Chinese Opera Backstage” at the San Francisco Performing Arts Library & Museum. Performed continuously since the mid 19th century to both Chinese American and non-Chinese American audiences, Cantonese opera introduced Chinese culture to a Western audience. At the same time, the art form shifted to accommodate its new audience, including female actors and serving as a “newspaper from home” for Chinese immigrants.
Co-sponsored by the Chinese Performing Arts Foundation and the San Francisco Performing Arts Library & Museum.
