The Forgotten Art of Lion Dance Puzzles

Corey Chan & Nolan Chow. Photo by Cody T. Williams.

Currently in the Choy Gallery: The Forgotten Art of Lion Dance Puzzles, curated by artist and historian Corey Chan. This exhibition is based on Chan’s forthcoming book about the history and usage of lion dance puzzles. These puzzles are done by lion dancers and are physical and mental challenges reserved for special occasions, such as the opening of a new business or blessings for newly wedded couples. Chan says they are “entertaining performances which underline our universal human desires to live happier lives.”

The props in the Choy Gallery demonstrate how the puzzles are set up. Labels accompanying them outline a story or a purpose for these puzzles. Also in the gallery, a KQED short video about Corey Chan, Kei Lun Martial Arts, and lion dancing.
