Collections

CHSA values the importance of our collections. At the moment we are investing in developing the capacity of the collection of nearly 22,000 Chinese and Chinese American historical artifacts. We are investing over $1,000,000 in an overhaul of the collection archive rooms and digitally scanning many of our files and objects to make them more searchable and usable for the future.
As we embark on this endeavor, to better serve you, we are pausing all research requests. We look forward to sharing with you and keeping you updated on our progress as we modernize our archival collections.
Thanks for your understanding and patience.

March 22 is World Water Day, an annual United Nations observance held to highlight the importance of water.
As Bruce Lee says: “Empty your mind; be formless, shapeless like water.”
As a dual celebration along with National Women’s History Month, CHSA is spotlighting Shannon Lee and her book BE WATER, MY FRIEND: THE TEACHINGS OF BRUCE LEE.
By illuminating her father’s most impactful philosophies on life and learning, Shannon demonstrates martial arts as the perfect metaphor for life. Through these introspections, they reveal how practicing those teachings in our everyday lives help achieve personalized growth.
You can find copies of BE WATER, MY FRIEND in our gift shop.
For more information, visit CHSA.org.

CHSA is excited to announce that the traveling historical exhibit CHINESE IN THE RICHMOND will debut at the museum, next week!
This series of oral histories is an extension of our Chinese in the Sunset project and is an ode to the Chinese American migratory experience to one of San Francisco’s largest and most diverse neighborhoods during the mid-20th century.
Chinese in the Richmond explores the American Dream from a San Francisco Chinese American perspective, through interviews with current and former residents and neighborhood business owners. CHSA recorded stories of backbone, ability, resourcefulness, vibrancy, success, perception and change, and how challenges were navigated.
After successful residencies in the Inner Richmond and North Beach, we are thrilled Chinese in the Richmond will be on view for visitors in our Choy Gallery — in time for our Chinese New Year celebration!
