March 18 & April 15: The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston
Celebrate Women’s History Month and the upcoming release of the film Mulan by discussing the significance and relevance of The Woman Warrior. Named one of of Penguin Random House’s “Books to Read Before You’re 30,” Kingston’s The Woman Warrior was considered groundbreaking when published in 1976 because it used a first-person narrative, using a mixture of mythology and methodological approach in comparison to earlier books discussing the experience of Chinese women. Forty years after the release of The Woman Warrior, is Kingston’s book still relevant today?
