Join us at this special benefit for the Chinese Historical Society of America, an institution dedicated to preserving Chinese American history and telling stories to enlighten a new generation. Located in San Francisco’s Chinatown on Clay Street, CHSA’s Museum and Learning Center showcases the social, cultural and political history and contributions of the Chinese in America.

6 pm Reception

Come early for live jazz by Francis Wong and a Silent Auction, featuring Chinese American genealogists, restaurateurs, artists, designers, authors, and entrepreneurs. Featured items include an original “Joy Luck Club” movie poster from costume designer Lydia Tanji, Bruce Lee memorabilia, and artwork from Leon Sun. Fashion items include a wide selection of vintage qipao and beaded handbags. Other popular items are a group ride on the San Francisco Fire Department’s fireboat, a three-hour Photobooth session, “Soul Side of Town” double vinyl album autographed by all the current members of Tower of Power, and handmade Cuban cigars in a humidor box.

7 pm Dinner & Program

Master of Ceremonies Ben Fong-Torres (Rolling Stone magazine, Chinese New Year Parade, East West newspaper) will kick off the celebration by performing some of his favorite classic tunes with a live band. Hear about the latest projects showcasing his remarkable bicultural life. You won’t want to miss his rendition of one of the most defining songs of the Summer of Love.

We will be paying Special Recognition to The Honorable Willie L. Brown Jr., who, as Mayor of San Francisco, supported CHSA’s acquisition of the historic building that would become the museum welcoming thousands of visitors a year. His groundbreaking appointments of Chinese Americans included Fred Lau as Chief of Police, Ed Lee as City Purchaser (on the road to becoming mayor), and Gorretti Lui to the Board of Trustees of the Fine Arts Museums.

Community volunteer Janet Lee Chen will receive the 2019 Phil & Sarah Choy Community Service Award for her contributions to children, youth and senior groups, creating a culture of philanthropy and volunteerism.

9 pm Dessert

Enjoy your dessert and coffee/tea while staff rings you up for your auction winnings. Everyone goes home with a collectible souvenir to commemorate the event.
