With humor, honesty, and intelligence, Liu explores the complex dimensions of American identity against the backdrop of China and America through searching personal essays in which he traces his family’s history, culture, and future. He considers the meaning of Confucius in modern life; the unseen role of Chinese Americans in shaping how we read the Constitution; his daughter’s efforts to select aspects of her Chinese inheritance; and the all too-American idea of tiger parenting. A CHINAMAN’S CHANCE offers reflections of one Chinaman on the role of chance in his own family’s journey and on the chance America still has to be something greater than the sum of its many tinted parts.

Organized in partnership with the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum, the oldest and largest organization in the country dedicated to the interpretation, promotion, and preservation of the social, cultural and political history and contributions of the Chinese in America.

Eric Liu will also be at Book Passage in the Ferry Building on Monday, July 28 at 6:00pm to introduce A Chinaman’s Chance.
