Join CHSA as Capt. Robert Wells shines a light on the hardship of the trans-Pacific journey from Qing China to the United States.
This CHSA presentation, told by Capt. Robert Wells, will recall the abilities of Chinese crewmembers aboard the U.S.-flagged Pacific Mail Steamships that helped ensure the safe transit of thousands of Guangdong and Toishan emigrants to San Francisco (1867-1875) on over 100 trans-Pacific passages. Among those voyages included the historic Qing Dynasty Burlingame-Sun Tajen arrival of the first U.S. Chinese Embassy mission on the PMSS China in March 1868. This program details the experiences these crewmembers endured and reveals where they made their first footsteps in America.
