Join CHSA on a virtual audio tour of CHSA’s collection of vinyl records to experience the ways in which racism saturates every aspect of American life, including popular music! Sound is just as powerful a visual medium in how we contextualize, understand and engage with other people, and we often forget how sound impacts us. But through this racialized landscape, Chinese Americans have had to figure out ways to create spaces to challenge those types of stereotypes by literally being on the stage, singing, dancing and performing in ways that subvert the racial politics of the time. We will be exploring the early turn of 20th-century orientalist music and the roots of the creation of otherness in American popular culture.
