CHSA is proud to share the triumphant moment of the induction of Chinese Railroad Workers into the Hall of Honor by the Department of Labor on May 9, 2014 — 145 years after the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad.

The Chinese role in building the railroad is a cornerstone of Chinese American history. Our Gala theme, “Work of Giants,” will launch a project to voice our own narrative of this legacy. While we know what they accomplished, we do not know much about them as individuals. Descendant families are a core component of this project. The Induction ceremony itself struck an emotional chord with many of the descendant family members present. Their family stories are the beginning of our effort to gather and develop a more complete history.

For more than 50 years, San Francisco’s Chinese Historical Society of America has documented and presented the social, political and cultural history of Chinese in America through exhibits, public programs, publications and events. In 1963, when CHSA was founded, there were less than a quarter million people of Chinese descent living in the United States. Today, over 3 million Chinese live in the U.S. – most having arrived after the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was passed. The DOL ceremony connected history to contemporary immigration and labor issues affecting Americans today.

We are committed to recover the forgotten and lost accounts of the Chinese in America, interpret stories, and weave them into the American historical narrative, affirming our essential role in the cultural fabric of our nation.

This year we are offering discounted pricing for responses by August 20. Tickets are $250 for non-CHSA members, $225 for CHSA members. After August 20, it’s $300 for non members and $250 for CHSA members. Buy Gala tickets below >
