Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion exhibition at CHSA

CHSA’s permanent exhibition chronicles the complex history of the Chinese in America, from the early days of the China trade to the history of Chinese immigration and the life of Chinese Americans. The exhibition extensively covers the Chinese Exclusion era, which helped forge America’s system of border controls, created categories of illegal immigration and “aliens ineligible for citizenship,” and established the principle of race-based immigration that Congress amplified through subsequent laws.
